Hello everyone

It's been a while since I've been on the forums! Been really busy with new teaching job, sorting out new house in Brighton AND Hattie who is already 5 months old!

She has a lovely nature and we are really enjoying her despite the trying time that puppyhood can be!

Here are some photos of her taken in the past week. Her coat is definitely lighter than when I first got her at 11 weeks. The one of her on a beach was taken on Brighton beach last weekend. There are two of her in a lovely dog friendly cafe in Brighton called metrodeco which I can highly recommend. I just also wanted to advertise Brighton overall as a wonderful place to stay if you have a dog. There are so many dog friendly pubs, cafe and shops, it's brilliant (every other person owns a dog!).

The one issue we are having and would love some advice on is how to stop Hattie wanting to jump up at people that walk past her on the street. It's not everyone, it's reserved mainly for women, especially young women, as they always seem to make the biggest fuss of her! We've tried distracting her with food treats which does often work and even changing direction. But she is so hungry for attention, sometime nothing will stop her! She'll be up on her hind legs, dancing and whining. It's pretty embarrassing at times! I am hoping she will grow out of this need for attention?! She certainly gets a lot at home!

She has been doing so well in training and is due to pass puppy 'junior school' tomorrow night (proud mum!) but this is one thing that I am getting a bit stressed out by. Any advice welcome!

OOh she's lovely - does that chair stay that colour after beach walks!! I was in Brighton a couple of weeks ago on that lovely Saturday but I was dog free at the time. Colin posted some advice on here regarding training them not to jump up, but you do have to have volunteers to help and i've never got around to sorting that, so i'm afraid at 8 months Dudley is still likely to do that to random people. The advice was re-posted just recently but i'm not sure on which thread. I expect someone can help.

As one Hattie owner to another I know what you mean about jumping up. I think it comes from the poodle side of things (apologies to Poodle experts if I am wrong!). Problem is you try to ignore people out on walks but they insist on talking to your dog. Believe me I have tried but I have now run out of steam, some days are good, no jumping some are bad. One day at a time I hope she eventually loses interest but until then I just live with it. Good luck!

Yes actually I met a poodle owner in the park the other day who said the same thing!

Oh well, good to know I am not the only one going through this. Other people are definitely half the problem! The other day in the pub the barmaid would not leave Hattie alone and then Hattie just would not relax which meant I had a rather fraught roast dinner consumption!

I have a bit of a soft spot for Hattie .. her coat is amazing, what a fab texture.

Oh regarding the jumping up, you could train the off command along with up command to teach her the difference and to train her when up is allowed.

However my Honey has an eye for the men and if a male friend comes to our house she will be on their lap within 20 minutes of them being here, she just loves the attention .. and all my girls jump up, they are just happy and want your attention. Being consistent with any training may help.

She is gorgeous ... really pretty xxx

Aaahh welcome back Eleanor...lovely to hear from you again!!! :D :D

I was just commenting on another thread that we hadn't seen you for a while... You were missed :).

Well Hattie is a little sweetie pie... She reminds me a little of Molly too.
Glad all is going well and she'll be developing her own little character.

Keep the photos coming :)

xx

Well I stupidly had his coat trimmed about a week after that photo as it was starting to get too thick to brush but in hindsight, I could have just used a Karlie comb instead. It started to grow back completely differently...thicker and curlier....although still gorgeous.....just more maintenance!

My son thought the 3rd pic of Hattie looks like Biscuit but with longer legs!

ps: forgot to say that Honey jumps up at everyone too! x

Lovely to see a Hattie update... I see her granny perm has settled sown and she is looking lovely. Did you managed to get her to stop following you around??

Below is what I have posted previously which was advised by my dog trainer who is a crufts obedience champion!

Have your dog on it's lead in the sit position have a helper walk up to you and your dog, if your dog jumps up the helper must say''whoops'' immediately turn it's back on the dog and walk about ten steps in the opposite direction. Keep repeating until the dog does not jump up ( patience required!!) as soon as it does not jump up REWARD with a treat. After succeeding a few times make it more difficult by the helper approaching the dog in a more excitable way...saying something like hellooo little puppy, or pup, pup ,pup ....it's obviously more challenging for the dog but if you keep repeating the dog will eventually not jump and and again REWARD quickly.
In time the dog will learn to sit when it greets people rather than jump up as he knows that this will get him a reward and jumping up gets him nothing ( that's the theory anyway)...
It's really important not to ''welcome'' a jumping up dog as you are praising and encouraging incorrect behaviour...
You need to try this exercise with different people in different enviroments ...

Ha, well not really! She is a little bit more independent now, which has been helped by the fact that she can now go up and down the stairs by herself. She sometimes chooses not to follow us upstairs and will instead sleep downstairs (usually on the sofa when we're not there to stop her!). The main problem is when we are out on a walk with her and one of us has to go in a shop for example. She'll then make a big fuss although she can sometimes be temporarily distracted by food! Re night times I'm afraid to say after a few awful nights when she was 4 months old we caved in and she now sleeps in the bedroom in her crate. This was a hard decision but she was spending hours howling in the crate and we were being kept awake. I was unable to fully function at work doing my teaching job so something had to give! She now is much happier at night and we will have to work on gradually moving her out when she is a bit older!

The head perm has calmed down a bit and we have helped this by cutting the top a bit to reduce the volume!

I's exciting to hear that Roo and Kody are half siblings to Hattie. In the picture of Kody that I saw there is definitely a resemblance in the face. Harry must be one busy dog! :D

Hi Eleanor, what a lovely update, she has really grown up :)

I had the same problem with Obi when he was younger but he stopped it as he got older, so must have grown out of it it. However, now I have Roo (who is Hattie's half sister btw :) ) and she is doing it and I've noticed Obi is doing agin too. He obviously wants the the same amount of attention that she is getting!
