Well I haven't been posting much lately as every time I start one or both require me to pay attention to them. In fact this is my second time with this very post. And mind you it's almost 2 in the morning, they should be asleep right? In addition to these guys needing me I've gotten a tad busier with other things so they haven't had as much exercise this week and boy can I tell the difference. In addition to the three days/nights of indoor peeing, they seem to wrestle/fight/play more, not listen, dig (though that came to an end when Lexi peed in the hole after I refilled it), etc. I'm back to being regular about taking them out at night and in the morning as I think that's when the accidents happen. I've also decided to not fill up their water bowl right before bed as they were getting up all through the night drinking but didn't want to go out in the dark via doggie door and pee on their own. And it helps as it's not baking hot anymore but keeping an eye in hydration, too. We now have a routine for going to the bathroom ritual outside. They prefer to be escorted one at a time. I walk one down until they find their spot and go and then walk back to the patio area where the other one is waiting and then escort the second one to do his/her business. Lexi is phenomenal at on cue pooping and peeing and Beemer takes forever. Of course it doesn't help when Lexi distracts him now that she's all relaxed. Started training again. I was a bit lax for a while but their behavior improves so quickly after a a couple of days of training. They don't jump as much and the biting is decreasing (at least they stop after I tell them to), so mostly headed in the right direction.
So if you've made it this far - WOW! And you get to the payoff - the fun stuff (well that's what I think). Well The only place in the house they get left unattended is the kitchen/family room area as it is easily blocked off and right by the back door/doggie door. I've been using the indoor pen as there is also the water dispenser and other items that I can't put away but don't want them to chew even for a bit. And it's worked out. That is until yesterday. So normally Beemer will whine and high bitch bark and whine and squeal and whine whenever I leave the room for more than 30 seconds. And Lexi is either getting into trouble trying to climb things and grab things and eat things - those things which she should not climb, grab, or eat - or just lay down against the gate waiting for me. Well Tuesday morning while I was taking a shower Beemer's whine/bark/squeal took on a fevered pitch. I actually wondered if an animal was in the back yard. So I quickly finish showering start to dry off and oh who's that? Lexi walking into the bathroom all nonchalant with her back end sashay-sway. How did she get there? I quickly gob to the gate and notice that she had pushed the hinged part so that it created a little gap for her to get through. And Beemer on the other side of the bars just so mad at her. Now here is where they are smarted than me. I thought I had left the gap. So the next morning as I shower, the whining/barking/squealing stops altogether. And I've figured out silence equals trouble. So I rush out again and oh now there are two poos coming into the bathroom all on their own. That's right, Beemer has figured out rather than try to tattle, he will join in on the delinquency.
At times I think the togetherness just means double the speed and impact of trouble. But yesterday when. I picked them up for daycare, I really saw how amazing that togetherness can be. There were some new girls who love my two working the front desk and a large chocolate lab in the staging area getting ready to leave but it was taking a long time so the girls tried to squeeze Lexi and Beemer by so I didn't have to wait. Well you guessed it, that was a bad idea. I'm pretty sure my two didn't start it but the big dog went after Beemer. Luckily both girls were in there and stopped it before it got worse but the other dog clearly became aggressive. They got my two out and i checked Beemer out and calmed him down. While I was doing that the owner of the other dog was saying how she didn't know why he keeps doing that. So much I wanted to spew out at her but figured getting Beemer calm was more important. Well while I was sitting on the couch checking Beemer out, Lexi, my little fraidy cat, jumped right next to us and barked straight at the big dog as if she was telling it off. Almost always when dogs that are dominant come to them they back down and she runs away when other dogs bark loudly. But it was as if grew 5 times her size as certainly her bark did. In fact I had never heard her bark like that. Once Beemer started to settle, she went up to his faced and licked it. She's been a touch nicer to him all night. I'm sure that will wear off but it so reminded me of me and my siblings. We can fight and be mean and nasty to each other but the minute someone outside hurts one of us we go into that protective mode.
Well you've now read my long long long post an added payoff. Pictures.
These were taken tonight and so the focus isn't great.
The first is Beemer asleep stretched against my bed in his bed. And the second is the two of them asleep in separate beds but still next to each other with Beemer exposing his belly.
