Hi, Archie has gotten into the habit of biting his lead whilst out walking to the extent he nearly has the handle in his mouth. When I try to take it out of his mouth he will growl and snap. It's quite embarrasing walking down the side of the road with your puppy facing the other way trying to jump up and grab hold of the lead. Is there anyway to stop this? I don't want to just yank it out of his mouth because I am scared of pulling his teeth out but it's getting impossible to take him for a walk.

When it first started it was usually towards the end of the walk so I took this as him wanting to get home quicker but now it happens randomly throughout the walk. He will walk with it in his mouth for 5 minutes at a time and then drop for a bit before he tries again.

Sorry for the really long post, but any help would be really appreciated :)

Hi
My Enzo does this too, think it's just because he wants to play & wants my attention or to stop the walk ending by instigating play. Distracting Enzo works with a toy or something but if I'm/your walking down the road this doesn't help. I've heard a lot of good things about the "Bitter Apple spray" it's not harmful but makes whatever you spray it on taste nasty so this might work on his lead until he learns not to do it or grows out of it, I've been thinking of getting some my self. You can get it on Amazon

The dog trainer at the class we go to told me to run your hand really quickly down the lead towards them when they are biting it. It gives them a little fright and they stop. It worked for us. My puppy Alvy was always biting the lead but stopped after we did it a few times. It might be something they just grow out of as well, just general puppy ish behaviour.

I never used it on the lead but I have used the Bitter Apple Spray on a foot stool and a guitar stand that Alvy liked to nibble on and it works a treat.
