Have read about using a dog bell for toilet training ..., does anyone do this? Does it work? What sort of bell do you use? How do you actually use the technique (have read about several different methods so far).

Thanks:)

We use one. Alfie picked it up really quickly. When we took him out for the toilet we rang it on the way out and he got it within about 2 days. We used Poochie Bells.

He does sometimes ring them when he just wants attention though! Sometimes we have to hide them until he calms down.

Yup, Jojo is right! I am a HUGE fan of the doggy doorbell....or poochie bells. Lady uses it every day.
They are fantastic and they pick them up quickly, and you can bring them to other people's homes when visiting, so that your dog even when not in it's own surroundings, they can still tell you when they need to go outside.

Our technique was....hang the bells on a hook next to the door. when we would take her outside for the washroom, we would take her paw and ring the bells, then straight outsied....we did this for 1 day and by day 2 she was ringing it to go outside.
Lady was not good at the whole potty training thing....it took her a long time, and it was the bells that finally got us without an accident.

Let me know if you have any questions.

my bells are from a company called Poochie bells, but...you can use just a regular few bells on a ribbon or somehting

Lucy uses hers too, and is what helped her not have any more accidents in the house! I just bought some jingle bells around christmas and tied them to a ribbon and onto the back door. Everytime I took her out I made her hit them with her paw, then after a few days she just went up and did it herself. Definitely do it, it makes life so much easier!

I need to try taking the bells to other people houses, too, cause last time we were at my in-laws she POOPED on their carpet twice!! OOPS! I guess we weren't letting her out as often as we should have been..

I made my own bell with some jingle bells that I had leftover from Christmas crafts. I tied a couple and hung them low enough that she could reach. When we took her outside to go potty, we used her paw to ring the bell. I put the bell up on a Friday, and by Sunday she had started using it on her own. She wasn't very consistent with it though - so if we took her out we still rang it with her paw. They pick this up really quickly, but you have to be consistent with making sure the bell gets rung every time you take the dog outside. Once in a while she will just ring the bell because she wants to go play outside, but we think that is okay!

They are good & we are 'sort of' successful with them. I say sort of because husband thought it would be fun to let Dexter play with them once & now he sometimes lapses into ringing them for games !!!! Grrrr :(

Buit on the whole they are good. Got mine from Dougal's Den website.

We started using the bells with Kody around 10 weeks old. He quickly caught on and now he lets up know when he needs to go potty. Like others have said, he will ring the bells just for attention so we too put them up at times.

I am just expecting an interesting week with the little ones I look after though. They will think they are great and will be ringing them all the time! I will be dashing around like a mad thing thinking there is a Cockapoo needing a wee and there will be a little boy sat there thinking I have bought a new toy to play him to with! :)
