I bought Millie an airdried ham bone at the pet shop to keep her occupied when we went out to eat last night.

She absolutely loves it. Stiped it clean and is working on the marrow ends.

My only concern is its obviously not a raw bone and is a weight bearing bone. Am I leaving myself open to trouble or is this an ok alternative to raw bones that I can't always get hold of.

:D

Julie I have given my dogs these bones in the past and they loves them .... my thinking is they are natural and although cooked they went down well with no tummy / toilet problems ... I know many prefer raw feeding and I did try chicken wings etc with my dogs but no longer feed raw at all .. stick to Barking Head dried food and natural treats :) I would give them ham bones again.

I got one of these for Eddie , I have never given him a raw bone as am a bit unsure about the bones from the butchers incase they are the wrong type, also have to be careful about the cats getting their paws on unsuitable bones. He completely loves the ham bone and it keeps him occupied in the evenings so I can watch telly or read a bit in peace, its lasted well over a week [with limited access]and he has had no dietry problems from it.

Janet Lolly will love one of these ....

Julie ... my understanding is any bones help clean their teeth .. as stagbars help clean too ...

Karen ... exactly what I do with the stagbars and bones ... if I leave them around all day they will lose interest .. but pick them up for a few hours and put them back down, & they think its a new treat :) :) peace is good :)

So glad it cleans the teeth too. :D

I was surprised at much of the actual bone she managed to eat, but on closer inspection it was quite a thin bone, especially compared to the beef bones that are almost 1cm thick in places.

Oh boy, do they drink water whilst enjoying the bone. I guess because Millie is on raw, they don't usually drink loads. I made hubby take Millie out for a late night walk as I was sure she'd need the loo before morning. Despite his moaning he took her, but not wee. Then at 4am she asked to go out side - luckily hubby was wandering around so took her out again. :D

She did the most driest poo ever imaginable yesterday afternoon. It just crumbled into nothing when I picked it up. I guess that was the results of the bone too.

I really must get a stag bar, think I'll wait for Crufts :D
