today we took Dexter on his first walk. We all went and just did a little 'to the end of the road' jaunt. Dexter walked ok although was distracted by the smells etc. We have an entrance to a dog walkers field at the end of our road so he was probably overwhelmed by doggy smell !!!

Anyway, tonight he was acting up a bit at home & biting so thought I'd take him out for a diversion & fresh air. We managed about 10m - he decided he wasn't walking anywhere despite the number of treats etc. And then started jumping up & down like a loony to get away from the lead. So I turned to go home & he practically sprinted home !!!!

It's funny how they do that! Biscuit will still pull on the lead on the home stretch - although we tend to go on off lead walks - so much easier! It's great when you can finally get them out. Would love some pics of Dexter!

Olive does that too. She'll refuse to walk, act like a crazy puppy to get off the leash and then run towards home when i turn around!

She is getting better on the leash, but some times she just wants nothing to do with it.

I think Dexter had a typical walk. They are certainly dogs that love to use there sense of smell, it tells them so much about other dogs and exercises their brain, wearing them out on walks.

As for his evening walk, Millie was not keen going out in the dark on the streets. She was ok in the garden, sort of, but definitely not the streets. She did grow out of it, but I can't remember at what age.

Are you going to go in field at the end of your road tomorrow and let him off lead?

Absolutely! The sooner the better as they won't stray at this age. It's always the older around 5 months stage where you start getting recall issues when the dog is starting to test boundaries.

Find a nice park or field where there are no immediate dangers nearby and go for it. Take lots of tasty treats and keep calling back to you. Touch and hold the the collar before you give the treat then let go and off again. Keep repeating this and you'll have a perfect recall in no time. Good luck!

Hi . . i'm Nanci and joined last week. Was reading the post on Dexter. My puppy Sami is 15 weeks old and still resists going onto the pavement for a walk. He does great in the yard and even on the concrete of our driveway, but puts on the brakes for the street. I liked the treat idea . . may try to coax onto street with that and just go a short distance. If I carry him onto the street he acts nuts like Dexter, pulling as hard as he can to go back home. Do they all do this? I thought he would love to walk, is a little distracted always with noises and leaves blowing etc.
