Hi everyone
I could do with some tips if anyone has some. Charlie can go out next weekend so I want to start getting him ready. He already wears a collar so thats not a problem. I wanted to let him have his lead and let it trail around so he gets used to it - obviously under close supervision, so I had a go today. Instantly he started to chewing it and had it tucked under himself and thought it was a great toy and even tried tug of war with it when i had hold of the other end loosely. I thought i would keep trying a couple of minutes a day but what would everyone recommend?
He has a flexi lead and a straight leatherish one, i wanted to get him used to the straight one as its the one he will need when i go to puppy training in 3 weeks.
Thanks for any advice x

I used to walk Dexter round the garden on his lead every day for 5 minutes from 8 weeks old. He hated it at first but got used to it quickly. When it's time to have his lead back on after a run in the park I always have a tasty treat ready for him too. Bonnie was easy as she has always copied everything Dexter does!

Yep just keep practising walking in the garden a little every day. I used a firm 'no' and flicked the lead so he had to let go every time he tried to bite it. I also let him trail it around so he just got used to it. Nearly every pup will try to bite their lead, it's new to them. You'll find by the time you get to go on a walk the distraction of new smells and noises outside will help make them forget the lead is there. It will take time but it will happen. :)

As everyone else said. Just walk around the garden for a few minutes whilst on the lead. You can do it a couple of times a day. They will get used to it.

I used to mix it up with other activies, ie a little ball game, a bit of lead walking, popping Millie into the bike basket whilst I carried it. Back to the ball game. They love the attention and will try to please.

I tried practicing in the garden and Lolly would constantly try to chew the lead. I even tried dipping it in vinegar to discourage her but that didn't really work.

I found the problem just cured itself once she was allowed out in the big wide world where there were far more interesting things to sniff, investigate and look at and she just stopped trying to chew the lead.

Chane leads can be very soar on you hands and can make walking unplesent. They are also very noisey when dropped and can scare some pups.

Start off with just a normal lead. Dont let him bite it. People fall into the "aww thats so cute" trap. Its cute when they are puppies but soon gets old. just a simple firm no and remove the lead. Also practis the leave/drop command when playing with toys this should help with the lead too if he knows to let go of toys when you tell him to.

Quick update...
I kept going today, we have done 2 stints of 5 minutes and distracted him by having hubby and daughter at each end of the house with treats so if we walked with the lead (but with no tension on it ) and if he didnt chew he got a treat, he absolutely loved it. This seems to work much better for him than leaving it trailing behind him which he then pounces on!
