Harley is coming up for a year old now and some of the older members will remember I was training him to be an assistant dog so thought I would give you an update.
As well as his normal training - sitting, down, heal and stay etc he has been learning to help me. I am deaf (apart from some sound with an aid) I have also had four back operations including metal work and have just had to arthiroscopies (forgive spelling) I will need new knees at some point. It appears I have arthritis in a few areas. So Harley will now remove my socks, and trousers we are working on loading the washing machine and emptying it. This week I have begun to get him to undo my shoe laces. He loves learning these new things and to him its all a game and in return he will get his favourite ball or a treat. He will pick things up if I drop them and I almost have him dropping them in my hand but he sometimes gets a little excited but he will get there.
He is doing very well for a young pup and will give a paw or touch with his nose, as well as rolling over much to the delight of any children who are watching!!
He is about to take his PAT dog assesment if he passes he will be able to go into hospices or sick childrens wards to brighten their day, I know he has helped me with my depression and all the pain and health issues so I know he can do the same for them. I will keep you updated.
