Hello, my name is Elaine and I live in Cheam in Surrey with my husband and 5 children. My youngest is 3 and has recently started nursery. I am too old for another baby (!) and I have wanted a dog of my own since I left my parents.

I fell in love with a chocolate cockapoo in Nonsuch Park last summer and the owner very kindly gave me the name of her breeder. I was due to become the proud owner of a pup this summer, but sadly the breeder cannot do this now due to unforseen circumstances.

There seems to be plenty of pups available in the local petshops but I do not feel that I want to go down that route. I also specifically want choc or black although I don't mind if mixed with white.

I have also been advised that using an american cocker can be beneficial as they have a more relaxed nature.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone who has any advice or is in the same situation as me.

I am so pleased that there is such a site as this and I look forward to posting again soon.

Cheers, Elaine x:)

Hi & welcome Elaine :)

So would you prefer an American cross or are you not overly bothered? English show crosses are also supposed to be less energetic than the English working crosses. However because they are crosses and Poodles can have high energy as well you can never be sure what you'll get.

What kind of breeder are you looking for? Hobby or licensed?
I got my two English show cocker x miniature poodle girls from Anzil cockapoos in Liverpool, he also does American cocker crosses :)

Look forward to hearing more from you & hearing how you get on with your search :)

Jandaz have a solid chocolate available due to a cancellation. Not sure if he is from an American cocker, which they do breed, but may be worth a peek on their website.

Ah thanks Laura for your quick reply! This IS a friendly site! I have only heard rumours regarding the american thing - I.m really not that fussed. As you can see I live in Surrey so Liverpool would be a bit of a stretch when it came to visiting regularly before taking it home!

Your dogs are beautiful - let's hope I will get one soon and I can share piccies too :)

Yes Jandaz is a breeder in Wales who breeds all three types (but with toy poodles I think).

& thank you :) Yeah lets hope you have pictures to show soon :D
& good luck with your search, although I would say not to rule out breeders that you like because of distance as a pup will be with you for 10+ years! So it's definitely worth travelling in the short term for a brilliant pup & adult dog in the future :)

I have a 3 year old and a 4 year old and so far they and the dogs are doing fine together I just watch the boys are not being too rough with the pups and watch the pups dont get overexited and get nippy. time outs for both sets if it all gets too high LOL

Totally avoid pet shops and puppy mills. There are some very good breeders around. Janice at Jandaz has some gorgeous pups as does Julia at Jukee Doodles but they have a waiting list that runs to the Autumn. They do have some really lovely Chocolate roans tho. Turi had a really nice list of breeders on a post that included the health tests that the breeders carried out if I can track it down I will link to it. Look for a breeder that as a minimum does the DNA test for PRA which can cause blindness and preferably that does hip scoring too.

Breeders online has a section with cockapoo pups for sale and there are a good few on pets4homes but be wary on there as the puppy mills advertise and you can end up with a very sick puppy from them.

All the best in your hunt.

Hi Elaine

Welcome to the forum :welcome:

My name is Turi - my partner Marcus and I are getting our first Cockapoo in five weeks after a year of researching, meeting breeders and obsessing over ads online. Thank goodness our wait is almost over!

If you're looking for an American, these are the breeders that I know of:

Debbiesdoodles – Debbie – Surrey – 07974 711 970 – no website
Debbie's puppies are raised inside and she’s what you’d call a ‘hobby breeder’ in that her mummy and daddy dogs are pets first and foremost and she has less than five litters a year.

Jacqui Figguies – Somerset – 01963 359 240 – no website
Jacqui had a litter recently… not sure if there will be any left – worth a call.

Anzil Cockapoos – Anthony – Liverpool 0 07871 907 532 - http://anzilcockapoo.com/default.aspx
A lot of Anthony’s pups are on the forum. I think he breeds with Miniature Poodles so they may be slightly larger than you’re after. He’s a commercial breeder but as far as I’m aware the pups are raised inside.

Syml – Sylvia – Lincolnshire – 07974 225 495 - http://www.pinetreecockapoo.co.uk/
Have some available puppies on the website at the moment… A lot of Sylvia’s pups are on the forum too. She is a commercial breeder and her pups are raised outside but are well-socialised from what I gather.

Topmac Cockapoos – Essex – no phone number. Have to fill out form on website www.topmaccockapoos.webeden.co.uk
I know of one of Topmac’s puppies. I contacted them but they never got back to me… I think because I work full-time.

Jandaz Cockapoos – Janice – Cardiganshire – 07966 302 043 - www.jandazcockapoos.co.uk/
A lot of Janice’s pups are on the forum. She produces lovely reds.

Essex Cockapoos – Donna – no phone number. Have to fill out form on website - http://essexcockapoos.co.uk/6.html
Donna and I had emails back and forth – she wouldn’t consider me as I work full-time. She runs another forum which you can see via her website.

There may well be many other breeders out there but these are the ones I know of that test for PRA - a disease common amongst Poodles that can lead to blindness.

I don't know when you're looking to get a puppy but if you're unsure of the different 'types' of Cockapoo I'm trying to organise a meet in Bushy Park, Middlesex for the 25th March. Over 20 members and their 25 Cockapoos have expressed an interest and it would be a great opportunity to meet people and work out which cross would be best for you. A Cockapoo, being a healthy breed, may well be with you for over 15 years so it's worth investing time in the decision-making!

Best of luck and let us know how you get on!

Welcome Elaine

Janice does have a lovely chocolate boy on her site. We are going Saturday to collect Bo, a little red girl, and when I showed my hubby the pic of the choc boy he said "definitely not! We are not leaving there with 2 puppies"! Lol
