Hi everyone

I'm a newbie here, we are looking to find a cockapoo to complete our family. My daughter has multiple allergies (including animals) but is desperate for a dog. We've held off for many years but she is now old enough and responsible enough. So after lots of research we have our heart set on a cockapoo but finding a good breeder is really hard! (as in I don't want to end up with a puppy farm) Added to that we live in Guernsey so I'm having to rely on lots of internet research so I'm hoping someone can give me some good advice as visiting breeders is somewhat a logistical problem!
I look forward to lots of interesting conversations - and I love seeing all your pictures!!!

first things first you need to find out if your daughter is likely to react to the dog cockapoo, some people do react to them, the only way you can find this out is if you can spend time with some cockapoos.

they can have different coats. you are probaby best looking at a curlier cockapoo.

what kind of reactions does she have to other animals.

Hi & welcome :D
Kendal is right, you need to make sure your daughter is okay around adult cockapoos to make sure, the curlier coat generally means they are more like the poodle which is why you would probably benefit from a curlier cockapoo than a straighter coated one.
How far are you willing to travel for your dog because you're quite a way away!? & what cocker x poodle cross do you prefer? All this will help when looking for a breeder :) x

Hi, I hope you find a good breeder but like people have said your daughter will have to spend some time with adult dogs to gage her reaction. The breeder I got my dog from took one of the litter to either Guernsey or Jersy, I can't remember which :)
Best of luck in your search!!

Hi all

Thanks for the advice - luckily her allergy shows as mainly sneezing. She has had an analyaphylactic shock in the past to an unidentified source and the tests show that she does have allergies to animal hair. She grew up around a long haired persian cat and would just sneeze, eyes water etc and she does the same when horse riding. The problem is finding someone with them to spend time with them.
We were looking at the curlier type but I'm sure whether we want an english or american cocker, I need to do more research on the size they grow to as adults.
There are 2 apricot cockapoos on the island - which is how we first found out about them and I thought the lady said she had them from a breeder in southampton, but not sure.

Hi.

I can only agree with the above suggestions on spending time with a Cockapoo first to see how your daughter reacts. Has she had much contact with other dogs? I am allergic to most animals but I am not too bad with dogs and fine with Daisy but it is a good idea to check first.

Have a look www.breedersonline.co.uk for a selection of breeders around the country but also have a look at our guide to finding a breeder and health tests:

Good luck with your search. :)

American crosses are generally smaller than english crosses, however you will need to take a look at the parents & their sizes to get an idea of what size your pup will turn out to be, also males can ge slightly larger than females. My Izzie is an english show cocker x miniature poodle & she is about 8.5kg & around 14.5" to her shoulders, so she's a really good size for us :) We didn't want a dog to be too big.

Good luck with your search and please let us know how you get on ...

I would recommend anyone with allergies spending a good amount of time around their chosen breed, plus with Cockapoos the tighter curl crosses may be better for allergy sufferers ... so the tighter the curl the better ... or possibly a F1b cross which is a Cockapoo crossed back to a Poodle ...

I really hope it all works out for you and you get the perfect puppy xxx

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum!

I know it’s not close but a reputable breeder should be able to organise for your daughter to spend time with an adult Cockapoo (puppy coat tends to be different from adult) so that you can work out if she is likely to be affected. I know that Jukee Doodles (based in Lincolnshire) do this. I say ‘likely’ because there is no fool-proof way of knowing if your daughter will be affected by a Cockapoo or any other ‘poo’ cross until you get one.

Good luck!
