Hi Everyone!

My husband & I are meeting with a breeder in a few days and hope to put a deposit down on our very first cockapoo baby. The litter has already been born and it will be 4 or 5 weeks before we take him/her home.

Ready through tons of info on the web I notice a lot of cockapoo hatred amongst people. Seems a little odd to me. Have any of you longtime owners experienced this?

Thanks!

It more has to do with the prejudice against the 'designer' dog breeding. People say that they are not a real breed - just a mutt and that you can get a mixed breed dog at a shelter.

Its their loss I guess. :D

Cute and Soft!!! yup we get that one too!
The only thing people hate is that we call it by a name which makes it sound like a breed. Most people who hate on the cockapoo are people who are interested in pure breeds.
Does them having only one family line make them less lovely...obviously I think not.
they are great and wonderful, and i sure wouldn't change mine for any other "pure breed" out there!
I have never had anyone say anything to me personally that was at all remotely hateful. I have also just read some random things. ;)

Welcome. I have come across the odd person who has been a bit sniffy and when I say she is a cocker x poodle they say "oh you mean a Cockapoo" in a kind of sneery, amused way. Maybe the same people would also dislike my kids who are half English and half Czech!!!!!!!

Everyone Ive met has been more than positive , alot of people ask oh is that a cockapoo, people ask is that a labradoodle or more often people will ask what breed but because they think they are lovely not in a derogatory way and most who have heard of a cockapoo are chuffed they've got it right !! Some will say oh I wondered what one of those would look like I never seen one. If I say cross between cocker and poodle they will often say Oh a cockapoo ... the odd people will laugh at the name but not at the dog. You'll find that the response to the dog is oooober positive, people will purposfully approach you to comment, stop cars, deliberately ask you... having a cockapoo is a very sociable experience and if poeple dont like it then then I really dont care their loss :D

hey welcome, Yeah iv had a bit of bashing(verbal) for owning a cockapoo. but only really on forums never in person, although their was an occasion where i was helping out on a dog Charity stall and had Echo with me but at the other end of the table, this woman i was talking to herd someone mention that Echo was a cockapoo, lol she started making comments about the stupidity of people with them and other stuff, i just laughed it off and said each to their owen.

I'm not really a confrontational person anyway but as i was representing a charity i didn't feel i should get involved, so i just let it pass.

but most people are nice enough about them to your face at least.

what are you looking for girl or boy what are mum and dad ?

Same here I've only had positive feedback from people who have stopped me with Alf (and you get stopped a lot!!!) Seems like Cockapoos are becoming more and more popular now and people know about the breed! Sometimes Alf is mistaken for a labradoodle.

Bet you cant wait to pick your pup up. Exciting!!:)

UGH, I have read quite a few forums online where people are just brutal towards the breeders and buyers of what they call "designer" dogs. Most of them have been either grooming or dog food sites. Not sure why they feel the need to judge or assume other's intentions .

We have had our dog for over 7 months and nobody has ever said anything negative about our Cockapoo to our face. I don't think most people who are strongly against "designer" dogs would say such things out loud;they are much braver online.

Good luck and get lots of sleep while you can ;)

i think the other posts are right when they say the derrogetory statements are about the idea of "designer" dog, or cross breed. not about the breed itself. purebred owners think it muddies up the lines, but i think it brings out the best in both lines. i mean... to get a dog that has the sociability of a cocker spaniel, and intelligence of a poodle, and fur being a mix of both is just beautiful... plus, i like the idea of each cockapoo looking unique and different. everything i've read is extremely positive.

i've read that cockapoos are the first crossbreed... started in the 60's. i even remember a cockapoo that lived next door when i was young and all i remember is how sweet a dog she was.

Cassie, my cockapoo, seems just ideal. i just adopted her... not sure if she's got any other breeds in her... she seems to look a little more like a cocker spaniel than a poodle.. but her fur is very soft, and her skin is like poodle skin.

she loves everyone. isn't all that barky. is sooooo patient and loving toward my boys. well behaved. i just don't think i'll ever want another breed. lol.

I appreciate your responses. I hope not to encounter any rude & opinionated people however a young man at my office reacted to my statement that I was getting a cockapoo with 'I hate those kinds of dogs' or some such phrase.

To me cockapoos are the perfect dog - intelligent, affectionate, non-shedding & as cute as all get-out!

the non shedding can not always be garenteed, some cockapoos shed more than others. this is a common misconseption about cockapoos and labradoodals.

remember a cockapoo is a cross between a shedding and a non shedding breed, so it can goe eaither way. the least shedding dog you would need to pick the most poodle like, or more curly pup in the litter.

Wow, I guess that "young" man has a bit to learn about manners.

But Kendal is right about the non-shedding. My dog sheds some but she isn't curly. Not sure why some breeders (including the one I got Chloe from) make the blanket statement that Cockapoos are non-shedding. It is also possible to be allergic to a Cockapoo. They are the cutest though :)

that's true. i'm thankful my hubbie isn't allergic to cassie. she has straighter hair, it's just got cute waves and curls in spots. i've noticed just a few little sheddies, but it seems like normal people hair shedding. not like on the furniture or anything. like when i brush her or stuff.

what a goob that guy was. people can be so rude.

Looks like we will be cockapoo parents in about 4 weeks!! We met with the breeder & got to interact with the 4 week old pups. So sweet! We will visit every week for the next 4 weeks so they get to know us.
