hello, I am new here I just wanted to ask some questions about cockapoos, since I'm getting one soon. i am so glad i found this site! dose anyone know anything about litter box training a cockapoo puppy?
Just wondering, why would you litter box train a puppy? They do need walks for socialisation and sniffing, so I am wondering, if you just require in the beginning? Much better to take them out, if somehow possible
I agree unless there are very good reasons much better to teach a pup to toilet outside. To do this you need to take them out when they wake up, when they have eaten, when they have been playing and at least every hour otherwise if they are awake. You need to really praise anything outside and clean up accidents with no telling off at all.
I would imagine you would achieve litter box training the same way with a clearly defined area but as Lena says outside is something pups very much need for enrichment and mental stimulation as well as toileting.
I am in a situation where my puppy isn’t going outside until she is fully immunised. So she will be toileting indoors for a few weeks. I am an absolute beginner dog owner, but IMHO a litter box with loose stuff, if that’s what you mean, wouldn’t be suitable. Cats like to bury their stuff but dogs as I understand it just drop and go. What I am using is several sheets of paper on top of puppy pads. Mostly the pads stay clean so just dispose and replace paper, more environmentally friendly. Training same as previous posts said. 4 days in it is going well, puppy really has the idea. Only problem is sometimes she has front legs on paper but not her bottom! Also, I have learnt to position myself on the clean side before praising, otherwise she runs through the wet patch to reach me and leaves wet paw prints.
I am taking her daily to a friend’s safe garden so she gets to enjoy the outside. Pleasingly she has no problem using the grass there and going back to using paper at home.
