I would like to increase the awareness amongst Cockapoo parents & to share my /my dog's experience & to urge people to report any untoward side-effects of the L4 Lepto vaccine. If not reported, all is taken as 'OK'. My vet was initially reluctant to report the below as an Adverse Drug Reaction. I had to insist. I will say that, after fuller conversations, the Practice was more accepting.

My beloved cheeky, bouncy girl went for her annual check-up & vaccinations. She's now nearly 2.5 years, so she'd had the full puppy vaccs, then at 1 year & recently her 2 year vaccinations. Unbeknown to me, it's only the Lepto vaccine that is required annually, the more widely recognised vaccines are every 3 years (distemper, parvo, etc). I guess that I was just ignorant, but I dutifully turned up at the vets when reminded for health checks, boosters etc & hadn't given it much more thought.....I was doing what was required to keep my dog protected & healthy.

We've moved geographically & have changed vets. Previously, Pip had been given the L2 vaccine. This time, she was given the L4 ( should offer protection against 4 serovars of Lepto opposed to the older vaccine which... yes, you guessed it, offered protection against 2 serovars, sounds like more bang for your bucks).

Pip had her vaccination at 1pm, we were home by 1:30pm. She immediately vomited (quite dramatically). I wasn't too concerned, a little grateful that she'd not eeked up in the car, a little peeved that she'd chosen a rug rather than the wooden floor. Anyhow, Pip took herself off to bed. Again, I wasn't too concerned, remembering how awful I felt after the lovely double joy of Covid & Flu, one in each arm.
A few hours later, Pip roused herself & came for a drink. She vomited almost immediately. This time, it was just watery froth. I told myself that she was having a 'not-nice' reaction & to keep her comfortable. It wasn't anaphylaxis, else I'd be on the phone to the vets immediately.
I woke in the night, feeling something was wrong. She wasn't in her bed & it was a bitterly cold night.. I found her lying across my drafty front door. She was limp & obviously had a temperature. There were puddles of 'froth' around the house, where she had obviously tried to drink & vomited again. It was 2 in the morning.
From a 60ml syringe, I drip fed her water until 8am, not enough to make her vomit, but enough to keep her more hydrated.
So,happily, Pip was turning a corner by the time I got to speak to a vet. I will say that I met with initial resistance, the very notion that the vaccine was the cause (was she car-sick? unsettled by the vet visit?....... my pooch & I travel many miles together; she safely rides shot-gun & embraces every escapade).

Pip is fully recovered. Her poop/diarrhoea was fluorescent yellow for a few days (again? cannot be good).
Just do your research & make informed choices. In the UK, there is actually a Gov web-page to capture ADRs for this vaccine & it does seem to have a question mark hanging over it - so, do your bit & if your beloved canine baby has a reaction, please do report it, as they cannot speak for themselves x

Hi Sam, sorry to hear your little dog was ill, it does sound like the vaccination might be implicated but it is difficult to prove .
Most vets have followed the '3 year protocol ' for some years so a yearly Lepto vaccination and a full vaccination every 3 years.

I am relieved for you that Pip has now recovered.
