HI

I'm on a waiting list for a Cockapoo and was hoping for advice re. male/female ? Are there any major advantages/disadvantages to either ***? I have 3 children aged 4,6 and 8 and was thinking a girl would be best. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

thanks

I think it iis very much personal preference- i like my girls , others stick with boys and some people have one of each! I have found that girls i have had have been very loyal to me and very much MY dog which is why i like them so much, the boys i have had have not been so 1 person-minded if you know what i mean. Iam sure others will have had the opposite situations though.

I think the only real difference is physical- unless you neuter the dog you have to decide between seasons and the potential problems that may follow (pregnancy/ infection/ problem dogs around) or an entire dog and the problems that may follow (terratorial marking/ humping things, you or other dogs/ running away to get to a bitch in heat). These are only things that can happen with entire dogs and are just the differences between.

If you intend to neuter the dog, barring the actual operation (to neuter a bitch is a bigger op so will cost more), there are no differences really to suggest one *** is better than the other. :)

I originally wanted a girl and chose a boy. But from Katie's description, he sounds just like a girl! - so I think it must depend on character, although he does lots of territorial marking when on walks. We are going to choose a girl next - simply to have one of each - so it will be interesting to see if there is any difference. x

thanks for your replies. Gives me a bit more to think about and maybe it is not so crucial to have a girl? If the boy is neutered it sounds like there wouldn't be a problem with running off and humping legs!

I've found the temperament to be the opposite, Wilf is definitely my dog to the extent where if I'm not going for a walk he'd prefer not to go, now Mable is predominantly my dog as well she prefers to be with me, but would more likely share her time and if I go will then move straight to my hubbie. Other than that both friendly and loving.
Kates info is great.
Wilf does check his emails when we walk but not an issue and certainly not if off lead, I asked my vet when getting a second dog re mixes of sexes and yeh, they stated that if a dog was neutered then basically they are asexual and also not deemed a threat by intact mails. ( not shouting this too loudly, and this is a secret, but my preference is blue ):D

Boy or girl puppy?? this article may help

http://www.mydogslife.co.uk/2011/09/24/which-puppy-should-i-choose/

I feel each dog is different regardless of ***, breed, mix etc and it really is a matter of choice ... if unneuter or unspay then there maybe some tense moments however for a family pet I think it is simply personal choice.. I have been brought up with males and females of different breeds and they are all different.

We have a boy and he is very close to me in particular, he is loving and as he is neutered we don't really have major issues with humping and marking. My advice is to visit the litter with an open mind and quite often your puppy will either just stand out or choose you regardless of ***!

I have had both male and female.
However, the males that I have owned have been altered.
That being said, I have found that the males, though protective, are generally more gregarious and keep their eye on the horizon.
Example, the girls watch the toys next to the beach chairs and never lose them while the boys are never surprised by the tide coming in.
I have enjoyed my time with both sexes and do not believe that one is better to have around children than the other.
