Hi,

We are thinking about getting a Cockapoo, and wanted to join a forum to gather as much info on the breed as possible (not sure if I have posted in the right area!) I'm looking to knowing how big they grow, whether they are good with children aswell as young children and if they get along with cats!!

Thanks, Lisa xx

Hello Lisa & welcome! :D
I can't really comment on the cats, although I have been told most cockapoos seem to like cats (although the feeling isn't always reciprocated lol)
Size can vary depending on the breed cross (toy/miniature poodle, american/english cocker etc). American cocker spaniels are smaller than English, & obviously toy poodles are smaller than miniature. What kind of size are you wanting?
My Izzie is an English show cocker spaniel x miniature poodle as she is about 14.5" to her shoulders fully grown (so quite small), but it always helps to see the parents & see how big they are as sizes can vary in breeds, Izzie poodle dad isn't a big one, & she is exactly like him looks & colour & size wise :)
There aren't small children in my house either, but I have a cousin who has a little girl & Izzie has always been great with her :) So I would say they are good with children from my experiences.
Although obviously you would need ot make sure that the breeder you choose is breeding for temperment :) So again it helps to meet the parents so that you can see what their personalities are like :)
Good luck with your search! There are always breeders you can ring up to ask your questions? Just as Anzil cockapoos & Jukes Doodles, they will help with any advice from a breeders perspective :)

Hi Lisa

Welcome to the forum :welcome:

My name is Turi – I joined a few months ago but don’t yet have a Cockapoo :(. My boyfriend Marcus and I are hoping to get ours in February or March next year... which is difficult considering the number of adorable puppy pictures that appear on here daily :love-eyes:!

The size/temperament/energy levels of a Cockapoo depends on the parents. Mum can be a Working Type English Cocker Spaniel, a Show Type English Cocker Spaniel or an American Cocker Spaniel. The differences between each of these is explained really well on Jukee Doodles’ website (Google ‘Jukee Doodles’ and go to ‘What is a Cockapoo?’). Dad can be a Miniature or a Toy Poodle.

The Cockapoo isn’t an official breed and as such there are no breed standards and no ‘right or wrong’ type – the one that suits your wants and needs in a pet best will be the most sound choice for you as a family.

I’d advise that you meet a breeder with a current litter – and preferably one that has one or two adult Cockapoos and also attend a Cockapoo meet if you can – they are regularly organised on here and you would be most welcome. Marcus and I attended one a few months ago and loved it, despite not having a ‘poo’ of our own. This would give you the opportunity to meet and view some (adult) Cockapoos in action and will hopefully help you make the decision as to whether one would be right for you.

In terms of breeders you could choose either a hobby breeder or a larger breeder but of paramount importance is that you see the mother and that the Poodle is PRA tested ‘clear’.

Have I forgotten anything guys?! :D

Turi x

Hi, welcome to the forum. A cockapoo is a great choice of dog, especially for a young family.
We have young kids of 5 and 2 and our dog is brilliant with them but to be honest most breeds of dog will be as good as you make them. Providing early socialisation happens with both kids and cats your puppy will be fine.

The kids need teaching as much as the puppy though, as they need to learn how to handle and when to leave a puppy alone. Also be prepared for lots of mouthing of the kids, its not aggression its just what puppies do and it can catch some people of guard and can prove a bit stressful:eek:
This stage doesn't last too long and your dog will grow out of it.:)
