Hey!

We're picking up our cockapoo puppy on Sunday, extremely excited!

Question about the crate, we are unsure whether to put newspaper down in one corner of it? Done a lot of reading on it, and we can't make up our minds.

Obviously we want him to be toilet trained as quickly as possible, but at the same time, would it make sense to keep newspaper in there for the night times/times when he's by himself just so that he has somewhere to go?

All advice would be most appreciated!

Yes I would definitely not put any newspaper or puppy pads in the crate, it will just encourage them to go there. Some people at the beginning will get up during the night to let them out to toilet, others leave them til the morning. Either way, you should hopefully have a dry crate in the morning :D
Let us know how you get on and ENJOY!! X

I put a puppy pad down on one side of the crate and a vet bed on the other side. If Millie had an accident and lets face it they are only babies, then it was easy to clear it all up.

I didn't use puppy pads outside the crate. Millie was clean in her crate after about a week or so. Outside of the crate it took a lot longer.

Its a really hard decision and took me ages to decide what to do - and then you never really know if what you did was "best" or not. We put puppy pad in half the crate and vet bed in teh other half. Gisgo did use the pad for wee and poo for probably 2 or 3 weeks....but it did mean that we did not need to get up to him through the night and he was not distressed in the night either. I know some puppies seem able to go right through the night from the very beginning - but I know some of them can't.....and we were never going to be able to get up with him as we need our sleep. It worked well for us, one night he just did not use the pad and then did not use it for a week, and then we removed it. Perhaps it took longer for him to go through the night, but as nobody was being disturbed in the night (neither us nor him) this did not matter. I don't believe it made any difference to the general house training as he did get very good in the house very quickly.

I go for a puppy pad in half the crate if I cannot let Minton out. At present he is in a 24" crate next to my bed with a pad at one end but I let him out in the middle of the night as I have to get up anyway. If he is left during the day he is in a 36"crate with pad and bed. I did this with Hattie she was clean quite quickly and I did not have to clean a poo covered poo! It is entirely personal choice and how you feel I just imagine how I would feel if shut in a room and told I would have to hold it!

I wouldn't unless the pup can read and will give him something to do!?!? If they are going to wee, they won't care if its on news paper or vet bed or puppy pd as long as its just not where they will sleep or eat....everyone find their own way, in the end don't be scared to make a mistake just learn from it... i did the same as you after the first night i was straight on here for info but i found everyone gave a differnt point of view... good luck

I went down the newspaper route & I think it did slow down training. But it suited us as a family as I didn't have to keep washing vet bed etc. It has to be the solution that works with you. I took the paper away after a month & have not had accidents since. Good luck

We really appreciate all this advice, Ted is just 8 weeks old & does go to the toilet in his crate at night time. The breeder advised us to pop him in his crate at night, we do come down to some presents in the morning :( just feel so guilty & sorry for him ! From pure experience with my babies, I guess it is just whatever you feel is right for you .?. You love them so much & just want to get it right for them ! Thank you everyone !
