Hi as we have been going walks for a wee while now which Mackie has enjoyed. The last couple of times he has been nipped at by other dogs and now every time a dog approaches he is growling SLIGHTLY. I hope this is not going to affect his socialisation with other dogs?

when you say he was nipped, what was the situation, was he playing and it got to rugh or was it passing dogs who just had a go.

do you attend any training classes, are in any socal do walking groups, or walk with a regular croud you meet who walk at the same time as you.

if not i would sugest one if not all three of the above as soon as posible, he needs to be round dogs in a controled situation where you know he will be able to relax and play

When Dylan was a puppy he was badly attacked and was very nervous of other dogs afterwards. His major recovery was when I found a friendly group of people walking with lots of dogs and we joined them so Dylan was surrounded by all shapes and sizes of dog and unthreatened. After a few minutes he relaxed and from that time on was fine. So my advice is as the others - get him used to walking with other dogs straight away before the behaviour becomes a problem.

Biscuit does this sometimes when a dog approaches. He also does it to other things like a strange noise in the garden, etc. I have up until now seen this as a normal thing for him to do when he is a little unsure of something rather than aggression. It is a very low growl. He did it the other day when I lifted him to see some horses. However, as soon as I say 'it's ok!' he stops. I hope this is normal. We are going to do training classes after Xmas.

Thanks everyone. It was an older dog on one occasion who basically could not be bothered with a puppy wanting to play. Things are alot better already as we have met a few familiar dogs one that is a show cocker spaniel called Fudge who is 6 months and him and Mackie get on great. I am going to start puppy classes in the new year to help with his socialisation. Thanks again.
