I'm sure most dogs are not keen on the postman visiting and go into guard-dog mode. My Maisie, who is rather nervy, barks a lot and will shred post if given half a chance ... Bess my puppy is quite chilled about the whole thing.

Well, returning from a walk a couple of days ago (in the car) I saw that the postman (lady actually) had left our house and was across the road ... I opened the car boot slowly saying "stay" with leads ready ... got Bess's lead successfully on but Maisie shot out like a bullet and dashed over the road up to the poor lady and barked away furiously (she's tiny so can't have been too terrifying!) ... postlady screamed, spooking Maisie who went running off at top speed down the road :eek::eek: with me in hot pursuit with Bess on lead.

Eventually got her back (lots of bribing with yummy treats) ... she was trembling ... and when I got back to our house I apologised to postlady who looked none-too-pleased.

Any advice welcome for future encounters. It would be quite funny if it wasn't embarrassing!:( Do others have a problem with this?

It's the first time she actually chased ... usually just barks ... but if there's a delivery I have to sign for it's very difficult (and embarrassing). I think I will have to keep her behind the kitchen stairgate to pre-empt problems in future.

Afraid I've never really been able to teach Maisie front door manners as she is nervy and on high alert.

I would speak to postlady and ask if she would be willing to be introduced properly to Maisie.Give her a handfull of treats and let her feed her and stroke her ,hopefully once she they get to know each other it will help.

My problem is Buddy is too friendly now and whenever the postie comes to the door and i have to open it he trys to shoot off outside and get in the postmens van???
Thanks Donna ... I could try a proper "introduction" with the postlady but don't hold out much hope as I tried this a few times with the gardener to no avail! It's nice that Buddy is friendly and not scared though.

Hi Sue, silly Maisie andit must have scared you having her run down the road.

One of the 'It's me or the dog' programmes dealt with the postman issue, but, sorry, I can't remember what she did! I think it involved sitting with dog outside and distracting/treating and saying 'postman' - maybe someone else might remember.

I keep Izzy behind the kitchen stair gate when I sign for post as our house front is on the main village street and I fear her running out the door onto the road.
Thanks Cara ... I do like Victoria Stilwell's approach so might try to find the postman episode somehow. The kitchen stairgate is a permanent fixture in our house so that will be a solution for now.

I don't have these problems with Bess, but it's Maisie's nervy "high alert" way that make some training very difficult!
