We have a gorgeous 14 week old puppy. She is a typical puppy, loves to play, nibbles everything, including hands and is a very happy soul. However, we are having one problem, her tummy. She was weaned onto brought Eukanuba puppy food, which she seemed to like and it seemed to suit her. She is, however a huge fan of eating stuff in the garden, particularly grass and leaves. She will literally dig at tge grass edges to get it out.
A couple of days ago she started to have reallly sloppy stools and a little diarrhoea. We went from no accidents in the house to the poor little thing urgently needing to go and so just squatting where she stood, etc. I rather expected that this was mainly due to her garden exploits and chewing! Took her to tge vet who declared her generally fit and well but recommended a bland diet of rice and chicken for a couple of days and prescribed some probiotics.
We have been taking her out to the garden on a lead to stop her eating everything and, of course she can now have very short walks out but her stools are still pretty sloppy and from what I have read on here I think this might be a cockapoo thing!
My big concern is that when we start giving her freedom in the garden again she will just do the same thing again.

Does anyone have the same issue and or can someone recommend a way to protect her tummy against this problem

Hello Ali , I have the same problem.
Within a week of getting Puffin at 8 weeks she had trashed my lovely garden including vegetables pulling up plants and leaping into shrubs and chewing them. I was also concerned she might eat something harmful . I have never had such a wild destructive puppy. Waiting for vaccination I couldn't yet take her out on the ground other than the garden so I started taking her on the lead in the garden which was good in some ways helping with house training because I was able to praise and reward when she relieved herself also to be sure she when she was 'empty'.
Puffin is 6 months now and asks to go out by crying by the door, she goes in the garden on a lead for loo breaks and on longer walks in the field where she puts anything and everything including sheep poo and wool in her mouth. I have taught her 'leave' but can't always manage it in time.
Pups usually grow out of eating things particularly when they have teethed and the teeth have settled in some months later.
I am looking forward to Puffin going off lead in the garden when she hopefully calms down a bit .

Make sure your puppy has plenty of safe toys to chew to help her teeth and to fulfil the need puppies have to chew.
Puffin loves greens, broccoli cabbage lettuce which she has in small quantities along with other safe fruit and veg . I think dogs sometimes crave green things, they are of course natural scavengers and would have eaten all sorts in the wild including the content of the stomach of herbivores they kill. They also eat grass and as the old terrier men used to tell me use grass to 'tickle' the back of their throats when they have an upset tummy to induce vomiting.

I would keep your puppy on rice and chicken until the poo firms up then switch back to normal food gradually by adding it to the rice mix. When feeding chicken it is best remove the skin before cooking it is too fatty for poorly tummies.
I hope your puppy is better soon .

Thank you so much. Yes she is a little scavenger all right. She is doing better now. Poo still a bit soft but not too horrendous and she seems well. I was cooking chicken breast without skin so that was good. Now she is having small portions of her dried food with a little chicken and we will see how that goes.
