Took Bo to vets just in case

I was a bit worried about 15 week old Bo as she didn't seem to do any poops yesterday in the garden. She was circling and straining but only tiny squirts of liquid came out and I though she might be a bit constipated (she is fed Royal Canin dried food). Also this morning she skimmed across the kitchen floor, which she's done a couple of times this week so thought her anal glands might be blocked. The vet examined her and said she wasn't constipated but her anal glands were quite full so he emptied them. Bo was not impressed and yelped a bit. I'm glad I took her as I'd hate her to be uncomfortable. She seems happy enough now though after a nice walk. Still no poops though.

Dont worry the poops will come. Millie suffers sometimes, a mix of full anal gland and not wanting to poop. I took Millie off of Royal Canin as a puppy as she didn't seem to enjoy it (she wouldn't eat it !) and tried a couple of other dried foods until I final plumped for Natural Instinct.

Keep an eye on her anal glands, Millie has to have hers emptied every 4/6 weeks, there are tell tale signs when it need doing. It doesn't always have to be the vets who do it, dog groomers do it too.

Royal Canin is a premium dog food that many dogs thrive on. When I brought Lady home she was on Royal Canin as well. I took her off it right away as I had a severe reaction to it myself just from touching it.
We now feed lady on a fresh food, and are considering going to the raw food. I am sure Bo will now feel better that her glads have been cleaned out.
she will poop, she is a little thing and can't hold it all in there...if you are worried you can always switch to chicken and rice for a couple meals....but I am sure she will be fine, good for you to take her to the vet, sometimes it is just worth putting you at ease

Bertie has bottom issues too, it drives me crazy and him no doubt! He needs his glands emptying pretty regularly - although now he's back on Burns dry it doesn't seem to be as regular come to think of it? You can tell when they might be 'full' as he scootes along the floor, has trouble going to number two sometimes and will nibble at his rear. Once he's been emptied he's usually back to normal the next day. Our vet has suggested perhaps he has them removed but I'm not so sure? I'm sure little Bo will be pooping as usual in no time.

Our vet suggested that they could show us how to empty the glands - we said we were fine thanks, no need, we'll bring her back here if it needs doing again!

They need a bit of bulk to their food to let the glands empty naturally when 'evacuating' and once we were given this advice they've been ok.

Our girls are on a combo of Nature Diet and Natural Dog Food Co. kibble.

What is the risk of faecal incontinence after anal gland removal? I thought it was quite high and not something to be taken lightly. I too have had dogs who need regular emptying of anal glands and I have had a dog who was sedated and had them flushed out. Maybe some fibre added to Bertie's food might help. :)

That is something that worries me along with other things about having them removed so I really don't think I would go down that route, it was just something my vet suggested. I have started to add some fibre to his diet so fingers crossed this will help 'bulk' him out a bit and make trips to the vets less frequent, which Bertie would be pleased about :D

I had a dog once who had a growth in one of the anal sacs, so she had it removed. She didn't become incontinent but I know it isn't an op to be taken lightly as it can happen. As for emptying them yourself, I'm a nurse, well used to unsavory smells, but I've never smelt anything as putrid as that!!!!
