Water-lovers in Winter

Question for anyone with a water-loving 'poo like Dylan. Dylan is in and out of the river every day on our walks. He knows all the access points and makes a beeline for them as we approach. But will it still be safe for him to go in the river in winter or will the cold be dangerous? I can't see him ever not wanting to go in but can envisage a shivering dog with hypothermia for the rest of the walk. Or will all the running around keep him warm? Last winter he wasn't such a river dog, so it wasn't a problem. I could get him an equafleece, but he goes into the river several times so I'd have to wait until the end of the walk to put it on. Does anyone else have experience of this or any advice?

Hi
Well I am just starting to train Duff to wait before she goes into water.
The way that is working for me is that where I know there is a water its all lead/track line walking.
Up to the water, make her wait, give her a treat, walk away, give her a treat, walk back to water, make her wait again, give her a treat, then give her a command to go in the water.
I will update you if it works!

you will know your own aria where is safe and isnt safe for him, as for it being to cold he will always heat up when he gets home, even just rincing him off in a little worm water just to take the cill off him and stick him next to the heater.

my lot love the water, but i do find that they will change a little in winter depending on the tempriture they wont go in the water as much.

i dont realy have to worry about ice as anywhere that their is a rick with ice coverd water my girls are generaly on lead. think i only had one scare with Inca running onto ice covered watter, but she lest it quicky and didnt go back on.

An interesting theory but knowing Dylan I suspect he doesn't have the sense to change his habits with the seasons. Once they establish a habit, its very hard to change it.
lol oh poor dylan!

:laugh:When he's freezing his you know whats off he might give it a rest til spring
Phoebe goes in the water whatever the temperature - I would have thought running around will deep him warm, you can always wrap him in equafleece once you've left the river :)
