Hi

I have just brought a much more dog friendly car as we are expecting a baby. I want Pixel to go in the boot really rather than on a seat. Does anyone know if you can get something to secure her in the back as I don't like the idea of getting those bars that go across the back of the seats.

If I do have to have her on the seat can anyone recommend a seatbelt or something to secure her? The ones I've seen so far don't look like they would make her sit still and I'd be worried she'd hang herself trying to move/jump.

Help greatly appreciated.

I have Lolly's old crate (small 30" one) in the boot. I put it in sideways so it only takes up one side of the boot and is completely wedged between the seats and the door so it is safe. That way I can still put other stuff in the boot too without Lolly getting to it.
The only problem is it tends to rattle a bit - especially when Lolly isn't in it. I don't tend to notice it much anymore but my passengers always comment on it.

I also bought Lolly a car harness to wear and be able to sit on the back seat (when the boot is too full for her crate - or when she has clean paws and the kids want her with them) I thought she'd love looking out of the window but she tends to lie down as soon as the car starts going and would rather be in the foot well so I don't feel guilty putting her in the boot where she can't see out of the window as she's obviously not that bothered by it anyway!

My thread about needing a new car crate may help see Puupy Place. Hattie prooved the effectivness of a crate today as I had to break sharpley and she just got thrown against the front of the crate as opposed to over my shoulder and through the windscreen! It is essential to make sure your dog is secure even at a speed as low as 30mph a dog thrown from the back seat can proove catestrophic!

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

I started with a soft crate and put in on the passenger seat, held in place with the safety belt. Millie didn't like car travel to start with and we needed her to get really used to it as we do a lot of car journeys. So long as she could see me, she was settled.

After a few days, we moved the soft crate to the back seat directly opposite the driver, so she sould still see me. As she got too big for the crate, I swapped her over to a car harness in the same position. She has space to turn around and stand.

We use a metal crate in the boot as we have 3 children so not enough room in back seat. It took Dexter a while to get used to it (he used to have nervous diarrhoea !!) but is fine now.

What I would say is that if dog is secured on back seat - be careful that he can't reach the baby. It'll be distracting for you plus when baby is older toys may get thrown etc

Congratulations on the baby news :)
