I tried practicing in the garden and Lolly would constantly try to chew the lead. I even tried dipping it in vinegar to discourage her but that didn't really work.

I found the problem just cured itself once she was allowed out in the big wide world where there were far more interesting things to sniff, investigate and look at and she just stopped trying to chew the lead.
